Santa Fe, New Mexico – One week after legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their home, the investigation continues with authorities working to uncover the cause of their mysterious deaths. Despite speculation, no official cause has been determined.
Authorities discovered the bodies of the 95-year-old “French Connection” star, his wife, and their dog on the afternoon of Wednesday, February 26. According to reports, Hackman was found in the mudroom near his cane, while Arakawa was located in an open bathroom close to a space heater. Investigators also noted an open prescription bottle with pills scattered nearby.
Authorities have since ruled out a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning, but many questions remain unanswered.
Gas Leak and Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Ruled Out
On Tuesday, March 4, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office released findings from the New Mexico Gas Company’s thorough investigation of Hackman’s home, conducted on the day the bodies were discovered.
According to the report, there were “no significant findings” of gas leaks or dangerous carbon monoxide levels. The company did issue five red tags for various issues, including a minor stove burner leak (measuring 0.33% gas in the air, which is not lethal) and code violations involving a water heater and gas log lighters in three fireplaces.
“These issues are not believed to be a factor in the deaths of Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa, or their dog,” the sheriff’s office stated. The findings have been forwarded to the Office of the Medical Investigator for further analysis.
Previously, officials had already ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning after test results came back negative. Additionally, data retrieved from Hackman’s pacemaker indicated his last recorded activity occurred on February 17, suggesting that was likely the date of his passing.
Family Remains Cautious, Nephew Speaks Out
Hackman’s nephew, Tim Hackman, spoke to Us Weekly about the family’s stance on the ongoing investigation. He emphasized their commitment to waiting for concrete toxicology results before drawing any conclusions.
“We’re waiting on toxicology. That will tell us everything,” he stated. “It’s hard to theorize. There are lots of theories out there, and I don’t want to speculate. It’s easy to speculate negative theories.”
He also noted that while his uncle was 95 years old, the circumstances surrounding his death have raised new concerns. “My uncle was at an age where you think, ‘OK, it’s time,’ but now, given what we know, things have changed a bit. It’s a major change.”
In an earlier statement to USA TODAY, Hackman’s daughters, Elizabeth and Leslie, and granddaughter Annie expressed their heartbreak.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman, and his wife, Betsy. He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us, he was always just Dad and Grandpa. We will miss him sorely.”
A Devoted Couple: Friends Remember Their Bond
Andy Wells, a flight instructor who had known Hackman and Arakawa since 1987, shared memories of the couple in an interview with Fox News.
“They were joined at the hip practically,” Wells said. “So if he became reclusive, I think she did too. She was very quiet, very focused. I thought she was great.”
He also described Arakawa as “so sweet and beautiful and smart,” noting her reserved nature and devotion to Hackman.
What’s Next in the Investigation?
With toxicology reports still pending, investigators continue to piece together the final days of Hackman and Arakawa. While initial theories surrounding gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning have been ruled out, the cause of death remains unclear.
Authorities have not disclosed any signs of foul play, but the presence of prescription medication and the unusual positioning of the bodies are factors being closely examined.
As the investigation unfolds, fans and loved ones await clarity on the passing of one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors. Hackman, known for his roles in The French Connection, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Unforgiven, left an indelible mark on the film industry, earning two Academy Awards and widespread admiration.
