Authorities in Rajasthan’s Barmer district issued a high-level red alert on Saturday morning, shutting down all markets and banning public movement due to growing tensions between India and Pakistan.
The order was released at 10:00 am by Barmer District Collector and Civil Defence Controller Tina Dabi, following multiple alerts triggered by security threats near the Indo-Pak border.
Markets shut and residents told to stay indoors
The official order instructed all residents to return home immediately and stay inside. All commercial activity in the area was halted. Shops closed quickly, and streets emptied within minutes as people followed the urgent directive. Police and civil defence forces moved across neighborhoods to ensure that no one remained outside.
Early morning drone alerts triggered first red warning
At around 5:00 am on the same day, a red alert was sounded after suspected drone activity was detected across the Pakistan border. Indian air defence teams acted swiftly and neutralised the aerial threat. No injuries or damage were reported.
A blackout was already in place from the previous night and lasted until 6:00 am. The blackout, a preventive step, kept the entire district in darkness for nearly 12 hours.
Second alert raised amid ongoing risks
A second red alert was triggered at 5:30 am, causing emergency sirens to be activated in various towns across Barmer. This alert remained in effect until 7:09 am. During this time, movement was strictly prohibited. Security forces, including police and civil defence units, stayed on high alert.
Emergency services were put on standby. Fire teams, ambulances, and rapid response units were stationed in key areas. Civil defence volunteers helped enforce the movement ban and spread awareness.
Why Barmer is on high alert
Barmer is located close to the India-Pakistan border, making it a sensitive area during times of military tension. The district has a long history of cross-border issues including drone intrusions, ceasefire violations, and illegal infiltration.
Increased use of drones along the border has become a major concern for security agencies. While many drones are used for surveillance, some may carry dangerous payloads. Indian forces have installed radar systems and anti-drone technologies to detect and intercept such threats quickly.
Situation monitored by central and state authorities
The Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi is in constant contact with Rajasthan officials. Senior officials are reviewing updates in real time and coordinating with security forces on the ground.
Although the exact nature of the drone activity is not yet confirmed, experts suggest it could be part of increased surveillance efforts from across the border. India has issued repeated warnings against any kind of provocation or aerial violation.
Past incidents raise public concern
Barmer has witnessed similar alerts in previous years. In 2020, the town went into lockdown after a drone was spotted near a military base. In 2022, shelling from the Pakistani side caused property damage in border villages.
As political and military tensions continue to rise, border districts like Barmer remain in a state of preparedness. Local people are now familiar with red alert procedures and usually respond quickly to government instructions.
Local services paused, schools remain shut
Schools, colleges, and most offices in the district have been closed for the day. Only essential services such as hospitals and emergency teams are operational. Transportation services have also been halted until the alert is lifted.
The administration has asked citizens not to leave their homes and to follow news from official channels. Internet and mobile networks remain active but are being monitored by local law enforcement.
What happens next
Authorities will review the situation in the coming hours and decide whether to continue or lift the restrictions. Until then, people are advised to stay safe and follow all instructions.
