Pilita Corrales, known across the continent as Asia’s Queen of Songs, has passed away at the age of 85. The sad news was confirmed on Saturday, April 12, by her granddaughter, actress Janine Gutierrez, through an Instagram post. Corrales, a celebrated music icon in the Philippines and beyond, left behind a legacy of timeless songs and unforgettable performances.
A Legacy of Song and Soul
Corrales was born in Cebu City in 1938 and began her music career in the 1950s. Her smooth voice, dramatic flair, and signature stage moves, including her iconic backbend, made her a standout performer in Asia’s music scene.
She gained international recognition after becoming the first Filipino to top the Australian pop charts with the song “Come Closer to Me” in the 1960s. But it was hits like “Kapantay ay Langit,” “A Million Thanks to You,” and “Dahil Sa’yo” that secured her place in Filipino music history.
Loved by Many, Admired by All
In her heartfelt tribute, Janine Gutierrez wrote:
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved mami and mamita, Pilita Corrales.”
She added,
“Pilita touched the lives of many, not only with her songs but also with her kindness and generosity. She will be remembered for her contributions to the entertainment industry, but most of all for her love of life and family.”
The family has not yet released full details of the memorial service but promised to share them soon.
“Please join us with your prayers and kind thoughts as we celebrate her beautiful life,” Janine concluded.
A Pillar of Philippine Entertainment
Beyond music, Corrales was also a popular figure on Philippine television. She co-hosted “An Evening with Pilita”, a long-running musical variety show that aired in the 1970s and 1980s. Later, she served as a judge on “Philippine Idol,” helping nurture new musical talent.
Corrales also appeared in numerous Filipino films, often alongside legends like Fernando Poe Jr. and Dolphy, cementing her status as a multi-talented artist who could cross over between stage and screen.
Family and Final Years
Pilita Corrales is survived by her children—actress Jackie Lou Blanco and actor Ramon “Monching” Christopher Gutierrez—as well as several grandchildren, including Janine Gutierrez.
In her final years, Corrales remained active in occasional concerts and guest appearances. Her voice and elegance continued to captivate audiences, young and old.
Honoring an Icon
The Philippine entertainment industry is mourning the loss of a legend. Tributes have started to pour in from fellow artists, fans, and media personalities who credit Corrales with paving the way for generations of singers.
“She was not just a singer—she was a mentor, a mother figure, and a friend,” one fellow artist posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Government and cultural groups are also expected to honor Corrales for her contribution to the country’s musical heritage. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) has previously recognized Corrales as one of the pillars of Original Pilipino Music (OPM).
A Lasting Voice
With a career that spanned over six decades, Pilita Corrales leaves behind a rich catalog of songs and performances that continue to inspire. Her life was a testament to the power of music and the grace of a true performer.
