Heritage Month Launch: A National Celebration
The official launch of Heritage Month brought together key stakeholders from the tourism, arts, and entertainment sectors, including hoteliers, tour guides, and industry enthusiasts. At the event, Mrs. Maame Efua Houadjeto, CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, emphasized the importance of preserving Ghana’s rich cultural heritage through its music and food.
“Heritage Month is more than just a celebration; it’s a movement. It’s about creating a lasting cultural identity that enhances our tourism sector,” Houadjeto said. “We want every Ghanaian and visitor to leave with a deep appreciation of our music and cuisine.”
This year’s Heritage Month activities aim to deepen public appreciation for Ghanaian traditions through various events, including social media campaigns, in-person engagements, film screenings, and storytelling sessions. These activities will foster cultural exchange, both locally and globally.
Food and Music: The Heart of Ghanaian Culture
The celebration of Ghanaian food and music is central to this year’s Heritage Month. The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) will lead the push to ensure local music receives global recognition. From March 2-9, Ghana Music Month, organized by MUSIGA, will amplify the influence of Ghanaian music across various platforms, showcasing the genre both within the country and abroad.
In addition to the music celebrations, food lovers will have plenty to enjoy. One of the highlights will be the introduction of food bazaars, which will be held annually on March 14. These bazaars are designed to showcase the nation’s rich culinary diversity, with dishes that reflect Ghana’s heritage.
Event Highlights and Food Celebrations
Several events will take place throughout the month to celebrate both Ghana’s culture and its rich culinary traditions. From March 6-8, the Made in Ghana Rave will be held at the AQ3 Centre in Diamond Hills-Kwadaso, a cultural gathering that will blend local music with Ghanaian artistry. At the same time, the Akwaaba Festival, another major cultural event, will take place at the National Theatre in Accra.
For food enthusiasts, the Taste 68 @ 68 Food Fair will run from March 10-14 at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (KNMP). This event will feature a wide variety of Ghanaian dishes, celebrating the country’s diverse culinary heritage. Additionally, Ghana Culture Week will be held at the same venue, offering more insights into the country’s cultural richness.
On March 15, Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z will air a special edition dedicated to celebrating the history and culture of the Ga people, highlighting one of Ghana’s most prominent ethnic groups. Later in the month, the GOBƐ Festival, dedicated to Ghana’s beloved beans and gari dish, will take place at the Legon City Mall on March 22.
A Grand Finale: Back to Your Village Food Festival
The month-long Heritage Month celebrations will culminate in the Back to Your Village Food Festival, which will be held on March 29 and 30 at the forecourt of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA). This event will serve as a fitting conclusion to the month, bringing together the best of Ghana’s food, music, and culture.
Heritage Month is shaping up to be an exciting and impactful celebration of Ghanaian culture. Through events focused on food and music, the celebrations will not only strengthen the nation’s cultural identity but also create an opportunity for global recognition. As Ghana continues to highlight its culinary and musical legacies, the world is invited to join in the festivities and experience the richness of the country’s heritage.
